Axelsen wins Denmark first YONEX All England Men's singles title since 1999

17 March 2020

BIRMINGHAM, England – Coming out of a tense 3-gamer with Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the semi-finals, Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen faced fellow Team Yonex athlete and number one seed at this year's YONEX All England, Chou Tien Chen (TPE), in his second successive final in Birmingham. Axelsen assumed charge of the final from the off, grasping the early momentum to take the first game 21-13 relatively comfortably. It was much the same in the second game, with Axelsen eventually prevailing 21-14 to become the first Danish Men's Singles winner since Yonex legend Peter Gade beat fellow legend Taufik Hidayat in a classic final in 1999.

The YONEX All England was Axelsen’s debut of the latest Astrox model, the Astrox 100. Although the German Open was intended to be the racquet’s debut, Axelsen displayed great confidence in the Astrox 100 while playing on the great stage in Birmingham. The Astrox 100 was also utilized by the men’s doubles champion Hiroyuki Endo.

Elsewhere, there was further success for Team Yonex as Hiroyuki Endo and his partner became the first Japanese men's doubles pairing to ever win the YONEX All England title, beating fellow Team Yonex athletes Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sulkamuljo in a tight affair 21-18, 12-21, 21-19. of

In the women's doubles, Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota won their first ever YONEX All England title, beating China's Yue Du and Yin Hui Li in a comfortable fashion 21-13, 21-15, whilst in the mixed doubles, there was disappointment for Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai as they lost out in a tight affair 15-21, 21-17, 21-8.

Away from the action, the first Legends Vision World Tour event to be held in the UK took place prior to the opening match on finals day. Local ambassadors Lauren Smith and Marcus Ellis, fresh from a succesful home tournament that saw them reach the semi-finals at the YONEX All England for the first time, joined other ambassadors and the legends as they entertained a passionate and vocal crowd with an array of tricks and gameplay.
