Fuzhou China Open 2018: World No. 1s Kento Momota, Kevin Sukamuljo/Marcus Gideon Triumphant!

Date
15 November 2018

Fuzhou, China — Team Yonex’s three top-ranked players put their ability on display and showed why they are the world’s best at the Fuzhou China Open 2018.

The path to gold in men’s singles was an exhausting one for Kento Momota (JPN). After prevailing in a marathon 97-minute match against China’s Chen Long in the semi-finals, he was in for another test in the semi-final against Chou Tien Chen (TPE). After winning the first game by a comfortable 21-13 margin, fortunes were entirely reversed when Chou claimed the second game 11-21. But after 77 minutes, Momota was able to add another tour title to his outstanding 2018 season, winning 21-13, 11-21, 21-16.

In men’s doubles, Marcus F Gideon and Kevin S Sukamuljo (INA) were similarly tested, in their final against He Jiting and Tan Qiang (CHN), they made a stunning comeback after eventually losing the seventh game point in the first game, but taking control in games 2 and 3 for a 25-27, 21-17, 21-15 victory. The top-ranked pair have now tied their tour title victory count from 2017 at 7.
