Yuta Ikeda Wins the Mizuno Open to give Yonex’s EZONE CB 501 its First Championship on Home Soil

Date
04 June 2019

Ibaraki, Japan — Yuta Ikeda claimed the first place trophy at this past weekend’s Mizuno Open, which serves as the qualifying session for the Open 2019, to be held at Northern Ireland Royal Portrush in July. Ikeda finished the last day with five birdies and four bogies to finish at a total of seven under. In September 2018, he won the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup, known as the decider of “Asia’s No. 1 Golfer.” Since his first victory in 2009, he has won at least one tournament every year, for a total of 21 victories in 11 years.

Ikeda started using Yonex’s graphite-hybrid forged irons, made at Niigata Manufacturing Headquarters, during the 2016 season. He won three championships that year and returned to the top 50. Last year, he began playing with the new EZONE CB 501 graphite-hybrid iron, and pinpoint iron shots have been boosting his results.

On the front nine on the last day, Ikeda hit three consecutive birdies on the third, fourth and fifth holes. On the back nine, he sunk a putt from 5m on the fifteenth to put him in second place, but on the 17th, a bogey threated his standing. Nevertheless, he came out on top, and thus far in the season, he is in second place for number of birdies, another result of his high accuracy irons’ play.

“I have been using the EZONE CB 501 since last year, and I really like the feeling of the face, essential to controlling the ball,” he said. “This week’s course was a monster — over 8,000 yards — so it was necessary to attack the pin with creativity and courage, but the EZONE CB 501 helps me place the ball where I want.”
